Praised as “one of the finest trumpeters of his generation,” John Marchiando currently serves as Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico. Additionally, he performs as Principal Trumpet with the New Mexico Philharmonic, and is a member of the Summit Brass, Enchantment Brass, Tromba Mundi, Fountain City Brass Band, and MarchianDUO.

A committed music educator, students from Marchiando’s trumpet studios hold performing positions in “Pershing’s Own” U.S. Army Band, “Commandant’s Own” U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, the Navy Fleet Bands, the Nashville Symphony, and the Canadian Forces Band. Several more have been appointed to teaching positions at New York University, Northeastern State University, Western Kentucky University, University of Northern Alabama, and at K-12 schools across the country. Additionally, former UNM students have formed their own businesses such as the Copper Street Brass, Mariachi Gran Victoria, AK Artist Management, and Diversify the Stand. Marchiando continues to serve on the faculty of the Rafael Méndez Brass Institute and is active presenting master classes and clinics worldwide. He has served as an adjudicator for competitions in the National Trumpet Competition, International Trumpet Guild, International Women's Brass Conference, and for state competitions and festivals around the country. Previously, Dr. Marchiando held positions on the faculties of the University of Toledo and Arizona State University.

Marchiando appeared as Principal Trumpet with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra from 2006 until its untimely demise in 2011, and has also held positions with the Phoenix Symphony and Arizona Opera. He has performed as Guest Principal Trumpet with The New American Sinfonietta, Santa Fe Pro Musica, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, and Santa Fe Symphony, and has appeared with many other notable ensembles, such as the Santa Fe Opera, Santa Fe Chamber Music, Chatter ABQ, Santa Fe New Music, and the Figueroa Music and Arts Project.
Active as a soloist, John has performed with ensembles including the Summit Brass, Denver Brass, New Mexico Philharmonic, “Pershing’s Own” U.S. Army Band, U.S. Navy Band, Santa Fe Symphony, and the Atlantic Brass Band. He has performed recitals and solos at the International Trumpet Guild Conference, Rafael Méndez Brass Institute, Thailand Brass and Percussion Conference, International Trumpet Festival at West Chester University, National Trumpet Competition, CBDNA National Conference, and at universities and high schools worldwide.

Marchiando can be heard on his solo recording with the UNM Wind Symphony, Arrows of Time, three Tromba Mundi recordings, The Non-Articulation Agreement, Quest for Adventure, and Sinfonia Americana, the Enchantment Brass recording A Brass Menagerie: The Music of John Cheetham, and the live recording by Summit Brass, Summit Brass, LIVE! Releases scheduled for December 2024 include A Tromba Mundi Christmas, Vol. 2: Best. Christmas. Ever. with Tromba Mundi, and an untitled live concert recording with the Summit Brass. John has also worked as a producer on several projects for the Summit Records label by the both the Summit Brass and the UNM Wind Symphony.

John received degrees from the University of Michigan (B.M. ’92, M.M. ’95) and Arizona State University (D.M.A ‘04). His dissertation, The Rafael Méndez Online Library (http://mendezlibrary.asu.edu), is the official website of the Rafael Méndez Library housed at Arizona State. Dr. Marchiando’s primary mentors include David Hickman, Armando Ghitalla, Charles Daval, Raymond Mase, Chris Gekker and Ramon Parcells.
